Hello gamedevs! Just posting to show off my JS13k entry, Super Glitch Box.
An homage to one of my favorite freeware games, it features fun glitchy visuals, stereo sound effects, original music and procuedurally generated weapons.

    Hello everybody!
I want to share with you the game I made this year for the #js13k jam, it's an stressing shoot 'em up where your objective is to survive much as possible.
It's my first time using fragment shaders in a game and I must to say that is not easy to start with, but at the end the results are amazing!

So if you want to play it you can find it in: http://js13kgames.com/entries/evil-glitch
Also as a requirement for the gamejam all code is opensource (https://github.com/agar3s/devil-glitches), there you can find links with the references I used for the game and people that helped me with feedback and support.
    Thanks!

The fifth edition of the js13kGames competition starts in more than two months, but I wanted to slowly start organizing everything already. I'll announce everything here, and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

For those who don't know: it's a JavaScript coding competition for HTML5 game developers. You have a month (from August 13th till September 13th) to create a game on the given theme (announced at the start of the compo) that have to fit into the 13 kilobytes limit with all the resources when zipped. It is a challenge, but the one that spawns creativity.
Check out rules and previous entries, forum topics from 2014 and 2015, follow compo on Twitter and Facebook for updates. Check the Resources page for tools and other useful materials.
And yes, I'm trying to improve the rules, voting system, and backend from your feedback taken over the years. Remember: I failed with so many things every single year and I will probably fail also this time. The compo is suppose to be for fun, and I'm doing everything mostly on my own in my free time, so instead of complaining feel free to help - thanks.

    Hi Everyone,
Just in case this might be useful, 2 years ago I created a micro game engine specifically for making JS13K games:
    https://github.com/kittykatattack/ga
... Yes, that's right - it has most of the features of Phaser (inlcuding a built-in sound effects generator!) but the code base is about 100 times smaller
It compresses down to 6.5k gzipped, which leaves you with another 6.5k for your game code - that's plenty.
Ga is still under active maintenance and development (it's my baby!) so if anyone wants to try it - go ahead!
I'm too busy to make a game for JS13K this year, but I'll have my eye on Ga's GitHub Issues in case anyone has any questions, bug reports, or wants to contribute to the project (... bonus points for removing code!)
    Cheers,
    -d13

I've updated the demo with your feedback - thanks! Here's the changelog:
    - colliding with the enemy ship only takes half of the shield now
    - explosion when shooting the powerups is shown
    - the volume of the sound of shooting is lower
    - fixed the bug of the next bosses not shooting
    - boss is spawned after "bossfight" message disappears
    - fixed the collision boxes of player/bullets/asteroids/enemies
    - updated to Phaser 2.6.1
    Play the game: http://rogers2.enclavegames.com/demo/
Now I'm working on adding Gamepad API support. If you happen to find more bugs or have any suggestions feel free to post it here, thanks!

end3r got a reaction from Xarialon in tween a numeric value?
Yes, tweening a score is totally possible. Check out my Enclave Phaser Template - there's a Game.js file with gameOverScreen function, or see this commit in particular:
      gameoverScoreTween: function() { this.screenGameoverScore.setText('Score: 0'); if(this._score) { this.tweenedPoints = 0; var pointsTween = this.add.tween(this); pointsTween.to({ tweenedPoints: this._score }, 1000, Phaser.Easing.Linear.None, true, 500); pointsTween.onUpdateCallback(function(){ this.screenGameoverScore.setText('Score: '+Math.floor(this.tweenedPoints)); }, this); pointsTween.onComplete.addOnce(function(){ this.screenGameoverScore.setText('Score: '+this._score); }, this); pointsTween.start(); } }, It's good to remember that when tweening the score you can hook up to onUpdateCallback to update the score text during tween.

OkijinGames, thanks! It have to be a bug, probably involving the life rune being the faulty one - I'll check it out. And yeah, I have to admit the difficulty balance is quite poor, but at the end I didn't have any energy left to continue working on it and decided to publish as it is. With an overall good feedback though I may try to get back to it and work on a few extra things.
nefertiti, thank you! And good luck beating the Elemental!
ecv, thanks! Great to hear you enjoyed the game, it really means a lot. And yeah, the difficulty level balance definitely needs more polishing.
Can you PM me the bugs you found? Can't guarantee it, but I will really try to fix them! ;]
I also remember a few similar stories, but it's always "someone else's problem" and it doesn't matter until you hit the wall yourself and say "yeah, it's all true". Good luck with your projects!

I'm already a fan of yours and your team for several reasons. You really intrigued me with this:
So I decided I HAD to read the story after I played the game. I "wasted" a big part of the evening playing it, so thank you very much  Yeah, I like it, that was addictive and I had a great time playing it. Simple and easily grasped game play along with all the FX. I do think the increase in difficulty is smooth, although I'm not sure if bombs and hearts are randomly added, and specially hearts do make a great difference in the outcome of the battle. The music is great and epic and goes well with the epic battles! Which they are, as they can and will get quite lengthy. I'd have never imagined this would suit a puzzle game that well. Of course after playing for a very long time, it does get repetitive.
I did experience what Okijin mentioned too, and I found a bug, which I hit for 3 times, sorry. After reading your story, if I were you, I'd throw my keyboard out of the window and bury my head on the ground. I didn't want to spend a long time reproducing it so I just got a screen shot and some explanations I could give to help you find it. I think I found a couple of extra minor bugs too. Let me know in PM if you're interested (I would not )
Last but not least I found your article very, very insightful. While it's not the first time I've heard this piece of advice, "listening" to a real story around it, is an eye opener. I really struggle keeping things simple. I hope I'll eventually FINISH something.
    Cheers,
    Eneko

Congrats on finishing the game! I can relate to your story.
Not sure if this is a bug but I was able to beat last boss without losing any HP (it kept refilling somehow see screen below). Also, I got quite a lot of "no more move shuffles" so I was mostly spending time searching for the only one move available in the grid... Overall I like the concept but would be great with few more features / combo powers and better balancing.

I wanted to share a game that is quite important for me, although you've probably seen hundreds of similar ones already. It's special personally, because it took me almost four years from the first prototype to the finished game. It gets even funnier when you see how small the game actually is, and that it could have been done in a month or two.

You can play the game here: http://wizard.enclavegames.com
And, what is more important, read the story here: http://dev.end3r.com/2016/06/i-hate-wizard-quest/
