  1. After getting some interest here, I started documenting the steps required to get my Phaser game on Steam: Part 1 - Greenlight Part 2 - Making it Look and Feel Like a PC Game Part 3 - Making an Executable Part 4 - Steamworks Original thread: Recently, my game Curvatron (made with Phaser) got greenlit on Steam, which means it will be available on that store soon. For what I gathered, there doesn't seem to be any other Phaser game on Steam right now, but I'm sure some of you are interested in doing this eventually. If there is any interest, I could document my steps toward getting the game there, including stuff like getting on Greenlight, getting greenlit, implementing the Steamworks API with stuff like achievements andleaderboards, etc. Would you be interested in this?
  2. Learning Babylon.js - The ebook!

Hello all, As some of you already knew it, I've been working on the a Babylon.js ebook for several months. Today, this book is finished, and I named it Learning Babylon.js. What is included in the book: - Getting started with Babylon.js (Hello world in 3D!) - Learn how to use primitives (box, spheres, torus,...), default cameras and lights - Detailed guide on materials and textures - Particles - Shadows - Collisions - Intersections - Physics engine (Oimo.js) - User inputs (keyboard/gamepad) - Animations - How to use exporters (3DSMax, Blender, Unity) - Shaders - Skeletons/bones - And more! The main goal of this book is to CREATE a whole game, chapter by chapter: start with the basics (cubes, spheres and torus), add materials, replace with custom 3D models exported from 3DSMax/Blender,... The game you will create is greatly inspired from the Super Monkey Ball serie. By the end of the book, you will have a complete game to play with, and (I hope!) enough knowledge to create your own. Sadly, I was not able to handle all Babylon.js features in this book alone (I would have spent a whole year on it, and DK is adding new features every day!), but I tried to cover as much as I can with one game. You can find some more information here : http://learningbabylonjs.com/, as well as some screenshots of the book. I hope it will help you in your next Babylon.js projects. If you have any questions, remarks, I'm not far from this forum (as you know it:) )

  12. My article and tutorial were both posted recently, so I'm sharing the news: 2D maze game with Device Orientation at Mozilla Developer NetworkMobile game development with the Device Orientation and Vibration APIs at Mozilla Hacks First one is the tutorial about the demo game Cyber Orb created with Phaser, the source code is available on GitHub. The second one is the article about the same game, but focused on explaining both APIs used: Device Orientation and Vibration. Hope it helps someone. Let me know if you have any feedback about those.
  13. Hey guys. I decided to write a tutorial on how to build maps in Tiled and use them in Phaser. The main focus is using many Tiled maps in a single Phaser map. This makes creating content much easier as you don't have to do much world building in code. This is my first tutorial, so if anyone does read it I would love any feedback. Feel free to ask any questions here as well. I use Phaser 2.3.0 dev in this tutorial, as it exposes the "type" properties in Tile maps. It covers building two Tiled maps, a world and a house to put in that world. This includes moving Tilemaps around and getting collision working. It creates a basis for a topdown rpg game, feel free to use it. Warning: It's pretty long You can find the tutorial at http://www.kieve.ca/ For a demo of what I build in the tutorial, visit http://www.kieve.ca/demos/RPG/ You can download the project here: http://www.kieve.ca/demos/RPG.zip

  16. New tutorials

We are adding new content to tutorials section in homepage, check it out. The most extensive tutorial written in recent days is a dungeon explorer game. Basically it shows how to create levels (layers) in MightyEditor and switch between them. Tutorial cover only basics but it's enough to start working on your own dungeon game. Also there were gamedev requests on more tutorials covering animation editor. So we have created tutorials covering basics and how to use animations in JavaScript code. Basically there are a character with 3 animations: walk, idle, jump which you can control from code with simple .start() and .stop() If you want us to cover something specific then write it in this topic
  17. Beginner with no experience

I'm a complete beginner to html5 game development. I've dabbled in java enough to know it well enough but that's pretty much it. How should I begin to tackle making games in html5? Should I try to learn javascript first and a bit of css and html on the side? I bought a book on html5 game development on amazon but it seems like it's a bit too advanced for me as the explanation in it are not enough and kind of expects me to already know javascript. How did you get started at this?
  18. Hi fellow devs, Recently I wrote a tutorial about using mulitplayer game engine `AppWarp` with cocos2d-js along with Facebook sdk. I though sharing here may help someone. So if you are trying to make multiplayer game using HTML5 then you can read my article here http://blogs.shephertz.com/2014/12/23/use-appwarp-with-cocos2d-js-and-facebook/ Hope it might be helpful to some of you Thanks
  19. Phaser Tutorial 2 with States

So, I am trying to expand upon the "Making your first game" tutorial (https://github.com/photonstorm/phaser/tree/master/resources/tutorials/02%20Making%20your%20first%20game) by creating states instead of running the game directly on the script tag in the html file. I have tried doing so by following the template provided, but I cannot answer must of the questions I have only by looking at it. I am also currently facing a bug that I would love some help in solving. The bug that I mentioned is freezing the game every time the player touches a star. The error I get is this one: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'kill' of undefined Lvl1.js:155 Lvl1.js is the file where I have the state. Line 155 points to the collectStar function: collectStar: function(player, star){ // Removes the star from the screen this.star.kill(); // <--This is line 155 // Add and update the score this.score += 10; this.scoreText.text = 'Score: ' + this.score;}collectStar is called when there is an overlap between the player and any member of the stars group (I believe) this.physics.arcade.overlap(this.player, this.stars, this.collectStar, null, this); Here I create and add the items to the stars group: var star = this.stars.create(i * 70, 0, 'star');That is all I have for the bug, now for the questions: I realized that I have to use "this" a lot, but I am still unsure as of why and when I have to use it. Do I use it when I reference items declared inside the state? Or with items inside the function? Why don't I have to include the parameters? (player, star) when calling collectStar? This was also the case in the tutorial, and there were no bugs there. How do I load items (sprites and whatnot) in one state, so that I can use it in another state? For example, loading items in the preload state to use in the game state. Thank you! *Edit You can find the current version of it here http://sammyisra.comoj.com/phaserGuy/index.html
  20. Upgrading to melonJS 2.0

  21. Hi ! I've written a new article around physics and Oimo.js on my blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/davrous/archive/2014/11/18/understanding-collisions-amp-physics-by-building-a-cool-webgl-babylon-js-demo-with-oimo-js.aspx It contains demos and links to understand how it works with babylon.js. The demo comes from the module 7 of the free MVA course we've built with Deltakosh: http://www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com/training-courses/introduction-to-webgl-3d-with-html5-and-babylon-js?m=11723&ct=34568 Enjoy! 22. Hi folks, I've been thinking about creating some nice video tutorials on HTML5 game development with Phaser and just wanted to ask you guys which medium you generally prefer when trying to learn new aspects of (game) development? (e)books or video tutorials? I for one prefer video tutorials but especially when it comes to programming stuff people also tend to prefer written material. I've been creating professional/commercial video tutorial-DVDs for Photoshop in the past and also some for Blender for example. (See my little youtube channel "BlenderPlaza"): http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmJYLX2j_DOKtGHG00tqdzQ/videos As I'm also doing voice overs now and then and have a trained voice people seem to like my voice quite a bit (just read the comments on my youtube videos...) and I really like doing video tuts. My first idea was doing an in-depth tutorial for tilemaps with Tiled and using them in phaser games. Would anybody be interested in that (especially beginners?) thanks a lot for your feedback! Marco
