.io ending of multiplayer games

Recommended Posts

I've noticed a lot of multiplayer games tend to end the domain name with ".io" I'm curious if this is a coincidence or if there is some reasoning behind it. For example - agar.io, slither.io, starve.io,  slither even lists the google play game as "slither.io" and reddit has a listing for .io games https://www.reddit.com/r/IoGames/

Is there reasoning behind having a .io ending as opposed to a .com ending or is it coincidence? Just wondering if there is a reason for that trend. If you make a multiplayer game, should you also end with .io?

Hasn't '.io' just become synonymous with 'multiplayer browser game' when we look at it through the lens of browser games? It feels like it has become some kind of classifying word for multiplayer browser games. I know the extension is used for services/websites other than games too.

If a player is looking for a multiplayer experience they're going to be checking out games that have a domain that ends with '.io'. You have game portals that specialize in .io games.

.IO stands for input/output that is why they initially put that into their game's website because it was just a game with input and output :P  but now the truth is that it just became a trend because of popular games like agar.io and it just looks cool!

1. Cheap.

2. Take advantage of the current hot .io trends. Because if you compare the popularity between web games and io games, you will notice that io games has been rising drastically.

IMO .io domains are not cheap. Many of them are more expensive than their .com companions.
