Should a life simulator reflect real-world limitations, or give players more freedom to shape their future?

I've been thinking about how different starting circumstances affect the experience of a life simulation game.

Some players enjoy realistic challenges, while others prefer experimenting with decisions they wouldn't make in real life.

I'm helping promote 1 in 8 Billion, a browser-based life simulator featuring different birth countries, life progression, and interactive choices.

For developers and players: how do you balance realism and player freedom without making the gameplay feel restrictive?
