sprites not working correctly in WebGL, but fine in Canvas

I am using inkscape to edit SVG levels.  This works fine & I can load shapes as sprites if my renderer is Canvas, but not if it's WebGL.


I am moving the "enemies" in this example to show how it works:



Here is exactly the same, with WebGL, an it loads the images multiply:



I think it has something to do with texture caching, but I am not sure how to fix it.
