Cropping image, image disappears

Has anyone run into an issue where cropping a Phaser.Image causes it to disappear entirely? A strange symptom is that the image that was cropped gets a negative height e.g.:

 

image x / image y / image width / image height 

 

image before crop:

3654 / 379 / 346 / 379

 

crop rect before crop:

3654 / 758 / 346 / 379

 

 

image after crop:

3654 / 758 / 346 / -379

 

crop rect after crop:

3654 / 758 / 346 / 379

 

I try setting the image height manually and no luck. I can also see that the crop rect is in the right place with debug.geom.
