CPU utilization during game.

I'm fairly new to canvas games programming (came from a Flash background) and Phaser is my first HTML5 games development framework. 
During the course of my development, i realised that even when my game is idling, the CPU utilization is pegged at 40-50%. On some machines (typically laptops and notebooks) this causes the internal fans to rev up.
Is there anyway to bring this down? Or is this something inherent to canvas games and something we got to live with?
