How to stop a sound on collision

I am very new to phaser and gamedev.  I have a 4 second .mp3 that needs to stop playing if the player collides with an object a second time.  The issue is that game.mySound.stop(); continues to play the whole .mp3 file after the .stop() is issued.  Any tips?
