Building an 'EMPTY' or node in Blender?

I have constructed an 8 mesh .blend that I wish to export parented to a Blender object without geometry.  I can read the exporter source code.  I am looking for something internally defined with the type of 'EMPTY'.  It is loosely described as a node.


Blender docs talk about a node "editor".  Is that it?  For elegant code, (material setting games), I do not want to make one of the eight the designated parent.  Anyone know how to do this?
