PIXI.WebGLGraphics.buildCircle sucking up CPU

Can someone help me understand what PIXI.WebGLGraphics.buildCircle does? It's sucking up a ton of CPU in my game, especially when I have lots of images on the canvas (e.g. over a thousand). I'm trying to hunt down performance bottlenecks and this seems to be the biggest one. Why would PIXI.WebGLGraphics.buildCircle be at 20% of CPU? Seems excessive if all it does is make a circle.
