Handling multiple tilemaps at once

Hia guys!
My current game has two (and soon more) maps - overworld and interior.

Right now I'm programming it to destroy and replace layers as you switch between maps - (this happens A LOT - imagine how many times you walk into a house and back out)

Is this the way to do it? Is there another way, perhaps by disabling it and hiding it or something? It seems a waste to destroy and spawn destroy and spawn or whatever.
