HighlightLayer and particle system do not play well together?

Dear all, I've tried to combine a mesh registered with the Highlight Layer and a particle system in one scene, something like that:

The result is that individual particles are shown as colored squares when the highlighted mesh is in the background.

Is there is a way to "exclude" the particle system from the highlight layer?
