well you could do this with a python script in blender, google for the repository Flare , they have already full animated and riggered 3D characters as .blend file and in the folder is  a .py which genereate you a sprite

I usually create my sprites this way by using cel-shading technique on 3D software (the technique is the same for whatever software).

 

to give you an idea here is the same image with normal 3D and with Cel-shading
