How Should Life Simulation Games Handle Player Decisions?

Should life simulation games let players control every decision, or offer an automatic choice system?

Giving players more control can make each decision meaningful, but too many repetitive choices might slow down the game.

I'm helping promote a browser-based life simulator called 1 in 8 Billion. Its interface includes year-by-year life progression and an auto-choices option.

From a game design perspective, where would you draw the line between player control and automation?

I'd be interested in hearing how other developers approach this.
